Brittany Howard - 'What Now' Review

Zachary Kynaston

The former Alabama Shakes frontwoman continues to carve her own unique path full of Neo-Soul, psychedelic melodies, and some powerful vocal performances.

If you asked me to sum up 'What Now' in one word, I think the word I would use would be 'GROOVY.' The second solo LP released by Brittany Howard is constantly throwing thick, juicy bass lines and drum grooves that will leave you no other choice but to bop your head along with the tune. Make no mistake, though, because this is much more than your normal funky Soul record.

I always appreciate music that steps outside of the normal boundaries of conventional genre, and doing so in such a daring and fun way is doubly impressive. There are elements of Jazz, Pop, Soul, Psychedelic, and Rock on offer throughout the LP, and the seemingly conflicting styles of music work together to create an irresistible symphony. It also helps keep things from becoming stale over the 12 track runtime. Thematically and lyrically, things are solid here too.

On 'Red Flags', Howard takes an introspective and vulnerable look at lost love, and is an early high point for the record. 'Another Day' challenges the listener to rise up against the increasingly hostile society we all live in. 'Prove it to You' is a hopeful tune about big feelings and proving your worth set to a House-esque backing track. The lyrics are straightforward, but not bland. Vulnerability is the main theme, even if its surface level. It's effective enough and works with the musical style!

While Soul music might not be my wheelhouse per say, I think 'What Now' is an easy album to recommend to anyone who enjoys a good vibe, a fun groove, and a level of experimentation that's still melodically satisfying. Moreover, I appreciate what Brittany Howard is doing with the medium, the soul genre, and it's clear her creative vision is sharp and realized. I look forward to the continued growth in her music as she continues to refine her solo songwriting, and this is an album that will definitely be going into my regular rotation.
