As we all age and continue to grow and mature, something that can take some practice and hard work is understanding just who you are. Making peace with who you are, and how you live, is a different story entirely. Something that I find so fun and captivating about music is that you get to see that process unfold, in real time, as their music progresses and grows along with the artist.
With all that being said, Kacey Musgraves' newest LP, 'Deeper Well', is the next chapter in the ever evolving catalogue that Kacey continues to weave. It's a record that is very introspective, and feels like an album that an artist can only make with age and experience. That theme extends to the melodies and the music itself. It's her most smooth, stripped down (in a way) work yet; accents of country, folk, pop, and even jazz work together in harmony to create a pretty chill, but still fun, release.
The production on the record is really tight without being overly produced. It's a great record to listen to with a nice set of speakers, and you can soak in the little details that are worked in throughout. Even at times when the pace picks up or a song has an intense edge to it, the production never feels overstated or noisy. Again, it fits the themes of the album really well and is a pretty well realized harmony between music and production.
'Deeper Well' may not push any musical boundaries or see much experimentation, but its themes of self worth, inner peace, love, and understanding life are too charming and earnest to make this anything less than an easy and peaceful listen. And sometimes that's exactly what your soul needs. If you're looking to scratch that meditative, inner peace itch, this is the perfect record for you. It's always exciting to see how artists change and grow over time, and this is a worthy addition to Kacey Musgraves' ever expanding library, and her most mature and wisdom filled work to date.
