It's no secret that I like music that's a little bit raw, a little bit vulnerable. It's also no secret that I like music that can experiment with sounds/song structures and still deliver a cohesive and well paced work. Today, I'm excited to share my thoughts on a record that does both, with mostly successful results.
The 6th album from ScHoolboy Q, 'Blue Lips' is a sprawling, raw, messy 18 track rap album that is steadfast in its vision and exploration, and one that isn't afraid to peel back the curtain for us to all take a look inside. It's a really fascinating look into a creative, bright mind. And while it might not always feel like the most focused or tightly structured record, there's so much creative, wild energy put into it that it's hard to resist.
From a production standpoint, things really stand out. The vocals are crisp and clear, and the beats are nicely mixed with nice, even mids and bass that isn't too blown out. There are quite a few samples, with most being in the classic Jazz and R&B genres. They mostly all work, and are well curated and inserted into the beats and mix well.
Lyrically, things are mostly sharp, vulnerable, and real. ScHoolboy Q does a lot of reflection on where he's been, his past, and the things he's overcome to get where he is. It's effective, and helps add a personal touch to the record. Things can get a little wild and fun at times too, helping break up the tone and keeping things from getting too heavy.
Overall, 'Blue Lips' is an album that is pretty easy for me to recommend, especially if you love experimental rap music. It can get a little long in the tooth, but there's enough good substance, unique song structure, and varied beats to make the project more than worth the listen.
